\nLIFE IN NORTHERN EUROPE FROM 15,000 B.C. TO THE TIME OF THE VIKINGS. A wonderful work of archeology, traces consecutively the movements and flowering of early Europeans from the Alps north to Scandanavia, and from Russia to Ireland--from the cave-dwellers of France to the "barbarian" tribes described by Caesar and Tacitus and the Norse Sagas. Following the discovery of cave paintings at Altamira and the Dordogne, a succession of excavations revealed a parade of cultures from the Ice Age to the time of the Vikings, including megalithis cultures who built structures like Stonehenge, peaceful Bronze Age villages, and Germanic and Slavic hordes.
