\n(Edit note) Possibly the earliest known use of the phrase “6 Million Jews” appeared in the New York Times of June 11, 1900, in an article penned by Rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise (1874-1949) stating "There are 6,000,000 living, bleeding, suffering arguments in favor of Zionism." This was in reference to conditions in Russia leading up to the Russian Revolution. Rabbi Wise was an ardent Socialist and Zionist and had a profound influence on shaping the political liberalism practiced by American Jews today.
