Pope Gregory XVII was not an official Roman Catholic Pope, but rather the papal title of Clemente Domínguez y Gómez (1946–2005). He was a self-proclaimed pontiff and the first leader of the Palmarian Catholic Church, a schismatic and ultra-conservative sect based in El Palmar de Troya, Spain. The Palmarian Catholic Church (1978): Clemente Domínguez y Gómez, a Spanish accountant-turned-mystic, claimed Jesus Christ crowned him as Pope in 1978. He led this group until his death in 2005. Scholars and former followers widely characterize the organization as an insular, high-control religious cult.
