The presence of Greek words in the book of Daniel has predisposed biblical critics to postulate a late date in the Maccabean era for the composition of that work. This is based on the assumption that Greek contacts with Palestine and with Mesopotamia were not widespread before the conquest of Alexander the Great late in the fourth century B.C. The basic critical position has not changed in spite of the great accumulation of evidence that points to contacts between the Aegean and the Near East even in the third millennium.

In this book, Edwin Yamauchi surveys the historical, inscriptional and archaeological evidence of the contacts between the Aegean and the Near East from 3000-400 B.C.
